History of the orchestra

The Franz Schmidt Chamber Orchestra (Franz-Schmidt-Kammerorchester) was founded in 1989 by the Franz-Schmidt music school in Perchtoldsdorf. Already in 1991, the orchestra was prizewinner at the Austrian "Jugend Musiziert" competition in Leoben. Founder and musical director Prof. Adolf Winkler has conducted for many decades in Austria, Egypt and in other European countries and was director of the Franz-Schmidt music school in Perchtoldsdorf from 1982-2003.

The orchestra has performed at the following occasions: "Franz-Schmidt-Musiktage", "Oper im Knappenhof", opening concerts of the "Perchtoldsdorfer Kulturherbstes" and the "Perchtoldsdorfer Sommerspiele" in Perchtoldsdorf, "Ignaz-Pleyel-Festspiele" in Ruppersthal, Klosterneuburg, Schwechat, St.Leonhard am Forst, Kirchberg am Wechsel, Wiener-Neustadt, Wolffbach, Zwettl , Neu-Lengbach ,(NÖ), concerts in Frohnleiten, Lassing, Graz (Stmk), Weyer, Pilgrimage church Magdalenaberg, Steyr (OÖ), Wien (W), Czech Republic: 1992 Brünn; France: 1993 Brive; Germany: 1997 Berlin Philharmonie, Coburg-Rödenthal; Sweden: 2000 Örebro und Stockholm; Egypt: 1995, 2001, 2003, 2005, Cairo und Alexandria.

By now, the concert repertoire spans works from the Baroque era to contemporary music. Composers Heinrich Gattermeyer, Peter Skorpik and Juri Geworkian have dedicated works to the orchestra.

Internationally known soloists such as concertmaster Rainer Honeck and principal clarinettist Ernst Ottensamer of the Vienna Philharmonic, principal flautist Robert Wolf of the Vienna Symphony, Quirine Viersen (cello), Linda Watson (soprano), Rudolf Fatyol (violin) from Rumania, as well as young artists such as Agnes Wolf (piano), Alina Pinchas (violin), Daniela Preimesberger (violin), Eva Semeleder (violin), Lilli Holetschek (violin), Janka Illesova (violin) from Bratislava, Ladislav Fancovic (piano) from Bratislava, Philipp Preimesberger (cello), Daniel Ottensamer (clarinet) have been or will be accompanied by the Franz-Schmidt-Kammerorchester.

Special emphasis is placed on training young members of the orchestra. Therefore an orchestral training course specializing in solo and ensemble playing has been held for many consecutive years as part of the "Internationale Musikwochen" in Lassing (Stmk).

As integral part of supporting neighbourhood relations, co-productions with orchestras from other European countries such as Switzerland, Holland, Germany and Italy have been organised. (Currently negotiations with orchestras from Italy are in progress.)

The orchestra has continuously supported young talented musicians, giving them opportunities to perform as soloists as part of the concert programmes. These concerts have taken place in Perchtoldsdorf, the Haydn concert hall at the Music University in Vienna, as well as at the Festsaal at the Justizpalast in Vienna. Further concert opportunities in other halls are being planned. These activites are very much appreciated not only by the faculty of the university but also by the audiences.

On January 27th 2010, Prof. Winkler announced his resignation from the Franz Schmidt Chamber Orchestra. For the year 2010, we have the young conductor Nicolas Radulescu engaged.
